Going abroad???!!!!!?!?!?!

Couple of things were confusing or rather bugging for the past few days. Amidst which I was happy to see two awesome templates given by Sanjayan and Ranjhith. : ) Thanks a lot. Oru paarattu vizha vekkalamnu yerpadu aitu iruku ;) Hehehe.. Manamarntha Nanrigal! :) Will put those in few days since this was replaced only few days ago. So wait to see the nice template friends.
Matter'ku varen ;)

Disclaimer: This post might not be interesting to some and even bugging for few of my friends :)

It was astounding to see many people leaving abroad for jobs these days.Till the age of 21 or 22 we are busy with our studies. Finishing the high school, getting admission in a good college to get a degree. And our parents are busy earning to spend for these expenses along with the day to day life expenditures. Somewhere after the age of 23 people get opportunities to go abroad and make a decent earning. Am entitled to do a clarification at this point. Am not talking about foreign visits in which case you stay there for some time and get back to your home land. Am talking about staying there for a very long duration and about settling there. Foreign opportunities will give you international exposure, experience in competitive world, stabilizes one's financial status. True, agreed. But all these at what cost?

* In many homes, this might be the time where the parents might have quit the career under the name Voluntary retirement or retirement. They might want to spend more time with their children or grand children. One has to miss this good time being with the family together.
* If the person has kids then the kids are missing the grand parents love & affection, the bed time stories and so on.
* Festivals like Pongal,Diwali,Christmas are being missed.
* Missing friends and relatives.
* We as sons and daughters should give a supporting hand to parents when they are in need of. No parents would even let us know that they want us to be with them. One reason- Pride takes control ;) and the second - They after all wants us to be happy. But its we the kids who should give moral and financial support when really needed without being asked or hinted for.

Early days people came from village to towns and cities for job opportunities since they had no opportunities in villages. But now India is not like that. It is just that we are aspiring for more in all aspects. As far as money is concerned, 'contentness' is a word which can never be used. First, one might want to stay abroad for a year or more to buy a car for your home in India and then another couple of years to built a house and many more years and many more commitments. All these small things which would make a happy home might appear negligible in comparison with the money, luxury and experience we earn abroad. But in the long run what do we earn in life apart from money? In the process of earning we miss many nice and pleasant things. I DON'T MEAN one should restrict going abroad but rather limit the time spending away from home, friends and relatives. A person settling in U.S or U.K, is it not like plucking a plant from its field rooting it in a different Island. Is life, all about spending 20 years of mechanical life at home land and then flying away from home and spending the rest of your life miles away???

1. Am not talking about going abroad but staying there forever
2. Am not talking just about home but also many other pleasant things being in your home land.
3. Finally, staying for few days or settling forever is one's own wish ;)

I dont think most people move abroad with the intention of staying our of their homelands forever. I have known people who were passionate about being India, and after graduation, when presented with lucrative opportunities, quickly moved out (and now struggling to come back!)

I dont think the problem is as uni-dimensional as you presented. May be you will realize soon!

Even i feel the same that going abroad is fine, but shouldnt get setteled there. I think, things are changing now and people realise that. India is developing a lot, and we get decent pay here plus foreign trips for 6 months to 1 year shouldnt be an issue...

Nice post, should be visible mostly to the NRI's ;)

True! I discussed with couple of young as well as elderly people who are in abroad for short and long duration but was nt satisfied with the responses. May b as u said self realisation is the best answer. Agreed.

Very true. When we get everything here Y miss something and go there ;)

Hi Queen,
I totally agree with you. People at first come here to stay for a short term and then go back. But people get tempted by the luxury, money here and they get settled here. Inga varalaam. 4 to 5 ys stay and earn well. Then go back to India. Come back whenever got an opportunity. Sacrificing valuable, priceless parent's love, friends, fun, frolic at home just for money is worthless and meaningless. I am in US and i get tempted at times. But I am strong enough and had decided to stay here for a period of 3 to 4 yrs to ensure a financial safe guard for my parents, sister. Then I would go back to my country and enjoy my rest of the life. If i get a chance i might go back to US but only for a shorter term. US life is just a mayakannadi and nothing real in it.

many people are now coming back to india. the main reason is kids.
i am myself planning to come back in 3-4 years once my daughter hits schooling . many of my friends ame back before their kids are in 5th std. after that its difficult.

but life in US is definitely an experience and these days living in Bay Area is like in TNagar only. restaurants, temples, dance classes are so many. the arangetrams in US are comparable to those in chennai.
definitely you miss somethings, but gain something else. the hospitals/doctors are good, there are lot of room for physical activity - running/hiking/camping etc, work is not as stressful as in india, overall life in india is more stressful.

agree with u da..we surely miss diwali and pongal celebrating der...but on the other hand we do gain some good experience...
without living in 2 diff places..u wont be able to compare which one is better...like i became more patriotic toward india after i came here...cuz i started to realize the value of our land...
at the same time...der r some things which i miss about canada..when i go back home...
ppl can still be in US and be as much connected to their mother land...:))
but i am for sure planning to go back home once i finish my studies...:)

you are talking about something that has happened here in the states- not necessarily going abroad- but moving away from friends and family- the root system of a culture- and following the jobs. america today is generic and cookie cuttered and really doesn't have as much of the 'american culture' that it used to- more of a consumeristic strip mall mentality. if you lose your root system, you have lost your way of life. it is good that you have seen this. progress and change will happen but it doesn't have to be to the detriment of culture and family.

Money & experience are the only two things that pull people abroad. In the long run, one would surely regret for missing many things for these two. If you are settling out of India, take your parents there atleast once in 3 years or so. Take a long vacation, come & visit all ur relatives/friends here. While you come here bring ur foreign friends & families. Take traditions/cultures/superstitions from here to your places of stay. Tell people about how you feel for your folks back home. There is love & kindness everywhere. Relationships & bonding needs some effort thats all.

Outsourcing wudn't hav happened if no people stayed out of their homes. It was so, this World would be illeterate of the 3rd world countries. Think abt it. Cheers!

Kovuchukaatheenga. I too believe that coming back to our HomeLand is the best thing to do. As we shud never ignore the country that has done so much. Also parenting & child education will be good here.

But, I was about to say that we shudnd fall for family-ties & get back. We shudn't fume after coming here. The willingness/motivation shud be something else, may be to be a part of India Biz developement, education...

Good Post and Good kostins :)
Reading lot of posts on this topic on many blogs... in tact I have a topic on same lines... which I have thot of writing.
I think its the quality of life, money, facilities that make people to decide upon staying back.
So if facilities and the quality of living improves, I am sure there will be a lot of people who will think about coming back...
And I have found lot of women like to stay back here because of the amount of freedom that they get here compared to India.
I am not trying to justify or anything, because I agree with your points 100%. I am trying to reason out why people choose to stay at a foreign country compared to being in India.
I fall in one of the exemption cases that you have listed. So these are just observations from my side.

Karthika said...

KK - I agree with you on this. I was talking to a couple of my friends and no one wants to move back. I was shocked when most of them said the very same freedom as the reason....

I think its a personal choice, grass is always greener on the other side.

People go abroad because of opportunities. People stay abroad because of opportunities + quality of life + of course, money.

People have comeback from US to india because of opportunities.

The real incentive for one to come back to in India is

- one is social enough to change the society for better Quality of life.

- when govt. allows opportunities competitive to what abroad offers!

I would encourage to every one in India to explore the world, so they know what India lacks and improve on.

Lot of those who stay abroad pump in a lot of investments here (=> opportunities)

Lot of those who come back do a rebuilding like NGOs, activism etc (=> Q of life).

All this is the root cause of venturing out! Leaving home is definitely good. Only, it puts you in nostalgia some times.
Incidentally, I have addresses the very subject on a different note @

hi pons,

hmm. had been absent for sometime thats why no entry!

hmm.. again a good, controversial topic..

i meant to say controversial b'cos the better, final and agreeable answer for this post would be 'it depends on the individual'.. aint i?

well, as most of my friends have given their comments, i dont think i have something to spell newly here..

by agreeing upon karthika's sayings, 'the grass is always greener on the otherside', i too would like to highlight the craze of people to go abroad because of

(a) the initial enthusiasm to fly and live in a different continent & country
(b) a different lifestyle, culture, environment, people, food etc etc
(c) obviously a good expsoure with experience which may yield some credits to the resume
(d) last but not the least MONEY

every1 has their own aspirations in this front.. so the duration of stay is totally dependent on their well and wish + situation demanding.

but i too heard of similar instances wherein the ppl who stay abroad for a long time feel bad later for having missed several aspects whatsoever they might have got it here in their motherland. very true!

one of my good friends also used to say, "i miss the happy occasion of being together with all my family members" - for diwali and pongal! but what to? pros and cons are always there..

off the track, i would like to say one thing.. whatever we say like India is grooming, developing etc etc.. still the so called fundamental SYSTEM has to be improved... i i myself have been experiecing the same and the victim for years..

the best example is, the spelling mistakes all government officials do in NAMES especially.. be it in PAN Card, License, RC Book, Ration Card, Passport.. bcos of their irresponsible nature, its we finally who end up in having a fight or request for more time to get it clarified or cleared at the last moment right...

everytime i suffer, i really get a feeling that i wish i could be the ANNIYAN.. you may laugh.. but its TRUE....this particular thing is very much lacking in our India and should definitely be improved.

This you might never experience in other countires am sure.. though there are so many other aspects of similar kind, i wanted to highlight just one among them.

i think, i have made a big post than yours ;-)

Harish said...

emma SEma topic! I am TOTALLY with u on this one!

I don't know how people can be so selfish and introverts when it comes to earning money.

I am not sure, i will settle in a foreign country even if i get a chance with a lucrative offer. I prefer to stay at home...

EAST OR WEST, INDIA IS THE BEST!

Oh whoa whoa!!! Ponnu! Now I feel like a sinner...lol. I havnt been home for the past four years and dont plan of going back for the next four either. When I mean home, I also mean India.

Not that I'm at this end, but just saying that saying back isnt good or that its wrong is wrong again, coz we never know the real reason for choosing to stay here, at time it can also be compulsions.

Cheers,

there is nothing like PERSONAL and all..yes Of Course i was a LECTURER in my department and college where i graduated my bachelors. (Amrita, Coimbatore).

One more info: Lecturing job is my dream profession which i even do at present whenever possible.

After being in this industry for sometime, i would be going back as a Lecturer ;-)

I came to Chicago to study and right now I'm just doing that or seem to be doing that. My major reason was my total passion for Computer Games. Being a creative person, I would love to make games some time in the near future.

@Neo

@Ponnarasi
//Very true. When we get everything here Y miss something and go there ;)//
Are you sure we get everything??
High quality(I mean it!!!) higher education is not that prevalent and accessible yet. (unless you are the lucky one in an IIT or an IIM)

But, from the bottom of my heart I would always like to be an Indian Citizen. An avid traveler, I've been to a lot of countries and I love the Japanese entertainers as much as I love the Koreans, the French, Americans, Spanish, Argentinians and of course Kollywood.. Accessibility to study stuff on various subjects ranging from Virtual Reality/Cinematography to Typography to Digital Photography to whatever we want is much more than what is available in India. As much as I'd like to stay back in Madurai eating parotta/chalna all week and raising a nice family and kids, my adventurous heart speaks to me otherwise. I miss India, I visit it every year. I'd like to be a nomad, learning all along the way staying/working in challenging multicultural environments. USA is one of those environs.

Agreed, India is still improving and no way in comparison with developed countries. My point is gain knowledge or money but make sure you return to the home land :)
