Princy, Hope you are talking about Turbo Compiler.(Its a mostly used free compiler in Colleges ).
The answer is.. If you use angle brackets, Compiler looks for the file in the subdirectory where the compiler executable file is located. Otherwise, it looks in the current subdirectory. Its by design and thats the it works...

i think the angle bracket "<" might have been interpreted as the starting of the html tag by the browser.. thereby it might have vanished..
